How it started

„I don’t want to fight poverty with my mouth but with my hands!“

This is what Günter Schmitter and his wife Ulrike decided after having spent their holidays in Gambia in 1978. Having seen the lack of institutions for the very young children they decided to set up a nursery school to provide early childhood education to the pre-primary school children.

An organisation was set up, money raised and a piece of land bought in Brikama, a rural area with poor infrastructure by that time. A fully German-Gambian cooperation was involved with the construction of a school building with an office

block and just two years after their first visit, Mr and Mrs Schmitter were present to open the school in 1979 with 75 school children and three members of staff.
